H.A.R.F stands for the Hawaiian Animal Rescue Foundation. They're a non-profit organization that operates solely off of volunteer work. They first made their appearance in our Community Engagement last quarter in a presentation about the importance of spaying and neutering. Since then, the Sophomore community engagement class has worked alongside H.A.R.F in a variety of ways. There were numerous things we could do to help. Some kids decided to help plan and manufacture a trolley for dogs that were born without legs. Other kids made H.A.R.F an Instagram account so they can reach out to more people. I, along with 2 of my classmates Daniel and Sami, decided to make a video. The video was about the importance of how you approach dogs with our intended audience being the elementary students of our school. Making the video was fun and fairly simple.
Why did you choose to show this work sample on your Portfolio?
This was a project that my group mates and I poured a lot of work into and managed to still enjoy, so I feel like it belonged to be put in here.
How does this work sample represent a 21st Century Skill?
This project was a good example of my Civic literacy and engagement skill. We worked alongside a local business in the hopes of bettering the lives of not just the animals, but those who own animals and are not quite sure how to care/handle them. H.A.R.F's whole ideal is to make Hawaii a safe haven for animals who have been neglected and are looking for a home, we get the opportunity to assist them in doing so.
How does this work sample demonstrate your growth? Is there something you could've improved on?
Considering this is one of the first projects where I've worked with any sort of local business, I'd say that's a great demonstration of how much more open I am to new opportunities. I'm reaching the point of life where I either have to be open to different experiences, or I'll fall behind, and this project helped me hone that in perfectly. I will admit however, I definitely could've made a better video.
