In Marine science, we were tasked to find a "new state fish". We figured that the humuhumunukunukuapua'a had held the throne as Hawaii's state fish for too long, even though it was very undeserving. Each student had to pick a fish, or any native marine animal, to become the new state fish. I chose the giant manta ray. After choosing a fish, we had to write 2 papers; a scientific essay with all the information on our fish of choice, and a argumentative essay on why it should be the new state fish (both pictured below). As an end product, we had to create a slides presentation that we would then have to present to a 4th grade class. That class would take a vote on who had the presentation/argument. I won because I'm just that cool.

Why did you choose to show this work sample on your Portfolio?
This was a very fun and immersive project. I had fun creating it and presenting it.
How does this work sample represent a 21st Century Skill?
The 21st century skill I used for this project was my communication skills. I think this goes without saying. I was constantly in contact with my marine science teacher to get feedback on both essays and my presentation. And then of course I had to present it to the younger class and get feedback from them.
How does this work sample demonstrate your growth? Is there something you could've improved on?
I would say that my presentation skills have improved drastically. I remember last year, barely being able to present without choking up, but now, it feels almost natural. As far as improvement goes, I could work a little harder on my time management skills. We had several deadlines that should've been met however I chose to procrastinate and push it off.
