This is another biology project. The goal here was to choose any Hawaiian Honeycreeper species and make a news-article-like presentation. We were first tasked to write 3 paragraphs in a first person view of the bird we chose, which in my case was the Po'ouli. We had to say how our lives were like in Hawaii, what we ate, where we lived, all that kind of stuff but in first person. Next, we had to right another 3 paragraphs on how we evolved. (It's said that all honeycreepers evolved from a single common ancestor, the rose finch, but adapted different beaks in order to eat different things so there wasn't any competition for food). Finally we had to create a phylogenetic tree (basically a tree that shows how our bird evolved) and cite our sources. I think the goal for this project was to have the students notice what it's like to be endangered or extinct. I think the teacher just wanted us to be aware of the fact that the birds are endangered and need help.
Why did you choose to show this work sample on your Portfolio?
It was an interesting project and I gained a completely new perspective of these birds. I also worked really hard on it and I would be stupid not to show it.
How does this work sample represent a 21st Century Skill?
This project used a lot of my 21st century skills. My information skills were used when needing to take in info on the birds, and projecting that in an understandable way. I used my communication skills when I talked to other students about the layout of the newspost. I ran into some problems when having to write from a first person perspective, but overcame it which demonstrated my thinking and problem solving skills. I used self directional skills to get this project done at a reasonable pace, and demonstrated my global awareness skills when I wrote this with the intent to educate others on the struggles of the bird itself (which is basically extinct)
How does this work sample demonstrate your growth? Is there something you could've improved on?
My time management skills have become better. Especially in a project like this that consisted of multiple parts that would later be combined to form one big project, the ability to manage your time carefully would be favored. And as far as improvements go, I think the only thing I'd like to improve is how it's presented. Personally, I wouldn't like just looking at a bunch of words as I'll probably find it boring, and I did.
