In Marine science, we had a recurring assignment called the creature report. It's exactly what it sounds like; we choose a marine animal we learned about that week and create a full-fledged report on it. Mr. Adam, my marine science teacher, decided that as a final project for the quarter, we would take this already made assignment and expand upon it. We were tasked to create, not only a presentation, but a scientific paper to go along with it. We had a choice of which animal we wanted to report on, however it was restricted to the animals we learned about strictly in the 3rd quarter. I chose the Bowhead whale as I thought it looked interesting and was fairly known.
Why did you choose to show this work sample on your Portfolio?
This was my favorite project we've had from Marine Science. I really love animals, whales especially, and I was able to create a full-fledged presentation and have fun at the same time.
How does this work sample represent a 21st Century Skill?
The 21st century skill I used for this project was my self-directional skills. It was completely independent so I had to do all the research, presentation, and preparation by myself without getting sidetracked as we had to meet certain deadlines.
How does this work sample demonstrate your growth? Is there something you could've improved on?
I learned that you just have to take your time with some things. You can’t always do the project the night before it’s due. And while I did take my time, it is just the 1st of many steps needed to become a better student. There were 2 parts to this project; the scientific paper, and the presentation. While I excelled in the presentation part, it was obvious that I could’ve refined my abilities as an essay writer. I’m not the best at writing papers, that much is obvious. I believe that if I could refine those abilities I could’ve had a flawless score.
